Over het boek
Scratch their eyes out. Just do it, you know you want to. Come on we’ve all wanted to do it. The people we envy, the people that drive us crazy with it, teetering on the edge of pure jealousy and self-hatred. It’s all a vicious cycle. We don’t get what we want so we become our own worst enemy. The truth is this negativity isn’t directed at the people in these images. The negativity is a reflection of what we see inside ourselves. The mutilation of the eyes is symbolic of the envy that I have for these people. The subjects are talented and gifted individuals who emit a sense of confidence and self-assurance. This work is about what the subjects have that I want or wish I could be. It is about anger, anger with myself. I am the opposite of my subjects and have low self worth. Many insecurities hidden behind a mask, behind the eyes. This exhibit is about the struggle within myself. These people are getting the sharp edge of the resentment I have towards myself. The expression of envy, the struggles, the beginning of building myself up and becoming the person I know I can be.
The chosen printing method was determined by way of curiosity and experimentation. I went through several techniques that didn’t quite feel right for the purpose of the work. I finally decided to print inkjet. After printing the images, the scratching of the eyes took place to reveal the self-loathing I feel inside. The damage of the prints is the way I hope to expose the inner conflict that was unknown by many until now.
