Over het boek
Istanbul, formerly Constantinople, upon first impressions it is simply chaos. There are vehicles and people going in all directions, all hours of the day and night, it is never ending and absolutely relentless! How the heck are we going to find our way around if the local taxi driver has no idea where our hotel is. He indicates for us to get out and gestures that our hotel might be in that direction in a very unreassuring fashion. We venture out and somehow find our way a few doubting minutes later. After a few days amidst the cheek-to-jowl chaos, we start to see the patterns, the musical notes, the rhythm and the melody, what a vibrant, exciting and beautiful city.
Istanbul is the heart and pulse of Turkey with the sights, smells and flavours of two continents melded over the centuries of trade and cultural exchange. We toured this fabulous country in a somewhat clockwise direction which certainly delivered many exciting experiences, witnessing first-hand the amazing growth in infrastructure and the mindful application of modern technology in a land steeped in history.
The last leg of our journey in Turkey ends in Gallipoli, for those of you that know me, my own military service, and family service legacy, will understand how meaningful and important it was.
We arrived at ANZAC Cove, it was a cool morning, the day before was ANZAC day, the portable stands were being dismantled, the cleaning crews were going about their duty, we were finally here. I took a few steadying deep breaths to gather myself for what I was about to experience.
The landmarks and places that we visited put into reality what we have all seen in the many and varied documentaries, this place of un-necessary human sacrifice. It made it all the more real, seeing and understanding the geography and the undeniable sick feeling and stark realisation of the futility.
