This is a photographic essay of St. John's Boys Home a Catholic orphanage which was built at the turn of the century. The book encompasses the history of the orphanage system and the beginnings of both the girls orphanage, St. Joseph's and the boys, St John's. It explores the Neo Gothic features of the architecture. And provides some personal accounts of life within the orphanage system. The book includes a foundation into the history of Goulburn, and the establishment of the Catholic church within the community. Many newspaper clippings assist in painting the picture of life during the times St. John's was in operation - 1888-1976. It is a book that contributes to understanding aspect of social policy,community, religion and early Australian history.
