Over het boek
Gunner George Leonard Boyd - 'Poppo' to his descendants - was an Australian soldier who sailed to war on 5 November 1917. Poppo served on the Somme as part of Major General John Monash's 3rd Division, Australian Imperial Force.
Poppo kept a pocket diary to record his journey from Australia, training in England and life on the Western Front. This was a journey made by nearly 300,000 diggers not unlike him. 46,000 of them did not return. Poppo was one of more than 130,000 who were wounded. This book illustrates his words with photographs and maps of the places he visited, providing context to his journey and experiences.
