Over het boek
Warning Some Explicit and Graphic Content
Most children in the United States learn the words “stranger danger” at a young age. And many adults live as if those words are still true, fearing the places, ideas, and people that are unfamiliar.
Blake Dahlin grew up in a conservative corner of Southern California, where the words “stay away from,” were heard often. “Stay away from that part of town. Stay away from those books. Stay away from those people.” As Donald Trump gained power and political discourse in the United States took a turn towards violence — both verbal and physical — Dahlin trained his lens on the places, people, and ideas in his backyard that his community preached avoidance of.
Across lines of difference, Dahlin found the common humanity shared by all people, no matter where they come from, what they believe, or how they live. Dahlin’s photographs complicate dominant narratives and perceptions about those whom we may deem “other,” and offer a glimpse of hope during divided times.
