Born in 1928 in Warburg, Germany, George Kronenberg grew up in a close-knit Orthodox Jewish family alongside his twin sister, Marion. Their early years were filled with synagogue life, Shabbat traditions, and the warmth of a devoted mother whose baking he would remember all his life. That childhood ended abruptly on Kristallnacht in 1938, when their home was destroyed and their father arrested.

At just ten years old, George and Marion were sent on the Kindertransport to England. Told they were going on vacation, they said goodbye to their parents—never to see them again. Hidden in George’s sock was a treasured gold pocket watch belonging to his grandfather, a small piece of family history he carried into an uncertain future. Their parents were later deported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered in 1944.

After the war, George and Marion immigrated to Cleveland in 1946 to live with relatives. George began working at American Greetings as a file clerk and remained there for more than fifty years, rising to supervisor of the art department. In 1956, he married Sally, the love of his life, and together they built a family rooted in faith, music, and community.

A lifelong singer and performer, George has shared his powerful story with students, choosing not to dwell in sorrow but to live with gratitude and purpose. His message is simple and enduring: be kind, appreciate what you have, and live each day fully—with Judaism always at the center of your heart.
