The global gemstone market—valued at over $30 billion—sits at the intersection of extractive economies, luxury markets, and art worlds. Through an ethnography of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Showcase, the largest of its kind in the world, this book examines the sensorial labor that transforms geological matter into high-value gems. In defining sensorial labor, the book concentrates on the orchestrated work of display, lighting, and spatial design that produces the atmospheric conditions central to valuation. The book shows how atmospheres, as ecstatic, i.e., over-flowing socio spatial and visual phenomena, enhance emotional attachments by imbuing rocks with “gemmi-ness,” while strategically, obscuring extractive violence, thus enabling commodification. It shows how capitalism operates not just through extraction and exchange, but through the orchestration of sensorial environments that render certain objects desirable and the violence at their origin socially acceptable.
