A catalogue of photographs taken by Warrington photographer Thomas Birtles of buildings in Northwich, Cheshire at the passing of the Brine Pumping (Compensation for Subsidence) Act 1891. A record of a town at a point of change, with timber framed buildings being constructed to limit damage caused by subsidence caused by rock salt mining and wild brine pumping. 262 photographs with appendix details cross referencing images to street addresses and dates taken. Also three sections showing detailed close-ups of carts, people and signs appearing in the photographs.
