Over het boek
This is Volume 3, the Valley Edition which is shot in a bleach-bypass colour style, a dark mood that I associate with Fortitude Valley in Brisbane. It’s a wide-angled, stream-of-consciousness view that will appeal to lovers of street photography.
The by-line, Ceteris paribus, Latin for all else being equal, refers to the idea that things may appear to be true but only under certain conditions and assumptions.
A photograph is an illusion, created by a set of photographic assumptions captured at a point in time, representing only a tiny fraction of lived experience.
Paribus, Volume 3, is my expression and feeling of the Valley on a day that I experienced it. It’s not any less real or more illusory than the reality of the actual place, all else being equal.

Over de maker
Jeff Ryan's main interest is life and light in Brisbane where he was born in 1955. He has been capturing its streets and public places since the 1970s and online since 2011 through brisstreet.com - Jeff Ryan's Brisbane (and other places). Self-taught, Jeff takes photographs for his own pleasure and creates magazines and books expressing his personal and sometimes poignant view of the world. Influenced by and appreciating photographers as diverse as Kertesz and Moriyama, Atget and Eggleston, he is the amateur photographer that he aspires to be. Being an observer rather than a reporter, Jeff has no intended message or story in his photographs other than what can be seen and interpreted by the viewer in each image. No photograph is more or less important than another one, ceteris paribus, other things being equal.
