Over het boek
In this series of portraits I portray individuals as the embodiment of strength and pride standing in the face of oppression by a power against them.
I research and reference texts from government documents and use the words as my mark to render each person with the very words that affect them. Using the word as a building block does not label or define the subject by the words being used, instead the words are blended together and they are transformed from a label to a broader gesture that is used to define a new visual standard of vitality and beauty.

I was drawn to music at an early age and being musically inclined I played in youth symphony and bands which led to my interest in electronic music composition that I majored in at college. In 1988 I went to work for Sam Francis, the noted abstract expressionist painter. I formed a trusting relationship with Sam and this would be instrumental in the change of direction in the form of my expression. He would prove to be an important influence in my pivotal transition into painting from music and an incomparable mentor and cherished friend. 25 years on, I continue as a full time artist working out of Los Angeles developing techniques and concepts that have a unique vision and are on one hand personal, on the other hand universal.
