Over het boek
Since 1912, Hang-ah is dedicated to present the first dim sum tearoom in the United States for diners across the world. It has been standing there inside a small alley as history progressed for more than a century. Inside this photobook, photos of the small restaurant from the dining area to the backdoor kitchen are displayed in chapters. One might walk into Hang-ah and see all the delicate and vintage photos on the wall but never know what the value behind those photographs. This book underscores the significance of the history of Chinatown from Hang-ah’s eyes. Frankie, the owner of Hang-ah, states that the menu has been constantly replaced in the last few years but he tries to keep the tradition of Hang-ah. Many of San Francisco restaurants have converted to machine-made kitchens because of labor cost. Frankie, on the other hand, refuses to change Hang-ah by even one bit. “People want authenticity. People appreciate history. To them, it’s more than a restaurant,” says Frankie. Being the first dim sum restaurant wasn’t just a name for fame and attraction. The stories, the memories, and the value it possesses is Hang-ah’s whole identity. Customers come and go for the delicious dim sums, and they all leave with a full stomach. Hang-ah isn’t just a plain tearoom; it is a storyteller. In fact, it might be a story itself. I believe it is necessary to share this history with people whether they know the tearoom or not. If readers ever come to dine at Hang-ah, I sincerely hope they come in with admiration for this small establishment and the weight it comes with.
