Over het boek
What initially began as a “street photography” approach in documenting U.S. Route 1, soon evolved into consciously attempting to achieve a balance of prowling for human imprint and landscape subject matter. The resulting imagery clearly reveals the coexistence of human activity and urban development, to the opposite end of the spectrum: decay of long abandoned structures and businesses, by and large, all part of American civilization.
This juxtaposition of elements has provided a fertile source in which a significant number of photographs contain reflected and transformed versions in windows and doors of the actual scenes to reveal multiple “layers” of visual realities. These photographs contain a wide array of content, which to my surprise at times, contain humor, absurdity, ambivalence, distortion of reality, saddening decay, and optimism. From a social-political standpoint, there is much room here for interpretation of contemporary American society and the hardships and successes that accompany it. -David Cardenas
