In MIssy's Trial strange witness but not witnesses dismantle the simplistic theory the authorities have for a murder. In the Gate, an interracial couple fights for their right to put up a ceremonial gate and are opposed until someone thinks it can benefit him. In My Backyard, everyone, several types at least come to the heroine's backyard at night, each with an altruistic but wrong headed agenda, arguing with each other because they really all agree, until disaster points out they are all wrong. In the Sandstorm, a very cultured, free, intellectual, warm, and inspired society with a wonderful heroine in a loving family is overrun by extremists with their self-righteousness so that in the end the society is lost and the family must flee.
