Over het boek
Black Spiritual is a photographic depiction of how I saw my neighborhood that I grew up in--Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY. It was an essay project that was critiqued by other photographers whom I accepted as mentors. For many years I wanted to publish these photos and Blurb lit the way and I am satisfied with the outcome.

Khalil Abdulkhabir
New York
Khalil Abdulkhabir born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY when it underwent a change from a white immigrant community to a black working-class neighborhood. A baby boomer that was heavily influenced by the end of WWII, the intensifying struggle for civil rights and the awakening black consciousness that spread throughout the land. A 'War on Poverty' anti poverty program put him in the company of a group of photographers from the Kamoinge Workshop—a group of accomplished black photographers centered in Harlem, NY. This relationship developed his 'street photography' style and spawned this book, Black Spiritual. He later opened a studio and specialized in processing and promotional photography.
