John and Gloria began their lives in different parts of the globe in a different time and place before the second World War; John on the Indian sub-continent and Gloria in England. Their childhoods reflect the challenges of the times. John joined the Merchant Navy and enjoyed new freedom and independence. After some years he yearned for greener pastures, moved to the United Kingdom and met Gloria Bird. They socialised together with a large group of including her sisters and their partners for a number of years.
They started married life making homes with their young sons in several places before choosing a new adventure and emigrating to Australia. The realities of the differences between the old country and the new, were initially a shock but it wasn’t too long before they all settled, joining friends and family in a quest for a better quality of life.
Their recollections provide an insight into the lifestyle and values of an era. Here, they share in their own words, some of their story for present and future generations to appreciate.

Saleena Ham was born in country New South Wales, Australia and grew up on a property near Nyngan. She began story-catching in her spare time because good yarns and personal tales of love and loss, humour and hard work, mistakes and mischief, dreams and disaster resonate with all of us and should be shared. Presently she lives in Brisbane, Queensland with her husband, Tony.
