Over het boek
The book is a compendium of a series of guide books by the same author based on one walk books whose theme is waterfall walks in the geological and archaeological landscape of Malhamdale and the surrounding area where the route of a walk encompasses views of waterfalls, geological and archaeological features sat in a back drop of scenic beauty formed by ice age glaciation and the deposition of carboniferous limestone scenery that attracts many visitors to the area. One of the most common leisure activities is that of hill walking, and there are many features in the landscape that one walks past without a pause for thought. This book is a complete walking guide of a series of one walk guide books. It will enlighten the walker to the beauty of the waterfalls and the many geological and archaeological features set in the Yorkshire Dales. This series of walks are in Malham and the surrounding areas which include Littondale, Wharfedale, Kettlewell and Inglebrough areas are described in terms of geological, archaeological and industrial features seen on the walks. Archaeological features such as Iron Age huts, and Bronze Age barrows are often missed when out walking, these are pointed out, as are the activities of mining from roman times to the late 18 00’s (19th Century). Not all the features will appeal, but many will, at least it is hoped the book will prompt one to look beyond the hills, greenery and scenic views and into time and history where man and nature have also created features of interest. Many of the manmade structures of industry, habitation and ritual are often obscured by the natural beauty of the Yorkshire dales as nature reclaims back its territory lost to man’s endeavour over millennium to survive and prosper. Geological features of waterfalls, water sinks and springs are highlighted. U shaped valleys, hanging waterfalls, drumlins and tarns resulting from the actions of glaciers also can be observed on many of the walks.
