Most of these images have been digitally process to reveal both the highlight and shadow detail, using what we used to refer to as "Contrast Masking" .

Here in the Digital age it's referred to as "High Dynamic Range" because it uses multiple exposures to capture a broad range of image detail.

In the darkroom it was fun and sometimes a great tool to save a shot. On the computer it becomes almost addictive.
