Over het boek
As a photographer, I have always been fascinated with colors and textures. I have also been intrigued by things that are old and decaying. Thus at some point, I found myself photographing things like rust, old peeling paint, rotting wood and other things that exhibit what in my eyes are beautiful interactions of color and texture. In the course of my work on car photography, and in particular photographing abandoned, junked and unrestored cars, I started taking pictures of rust and old paint in their own right with the goal of creating a collection of abstract images featuring those interactions.
This portfolio is dedicated to showing all of that beauty. The majority of the images in this book are an offshoot of my work in photographing cars, both abandoned ones found in salvage yards and other places and also at car shows where there are old cars in swap meets and even some of the cars in the shows themselves that are not finished or deliberately left with their original patina. Other sources were old train cars, old buildings, appliances, fire hydrants, industrial sites and many others. Many of these images are macro close ups of intriguing and colorful little areas found by closely looking at all of these decaying things.
The majority of the extreme close up macro shots were made possible via the use of Olympus TG-3 and TG-4 cameras using their 10 shot in camera focus stacking ability. Many of the images have had the color and contrast enhanced and sometimes altered using various editing software packages. I hope you enjoy this photographic exploration of rust and old flaking paint as much as I do.
