Over het boek
“Ship-pal” is a visual journey capturing a selection of shots taken by the author during the year 2018. The title refers to the number "18" in the Sino-Korean numeral system, reflecting the year the images were created and also a playful nod to a word easily mispronounced by non-native speakers, resulting rather as the pronunciation of the Korean "F" word.
Beyond the introduction and ultra-brief essays about the idea and concepts featured in the book, the text shines for its absence: the photographs speak for themselves.
Images are stripped to their essence and paired in diptychs, aimed to invite an infectious curiosity in the reader to decipher their deep untold connections, despite their sometimes deceptive simplicity. Stark, pin-sharp digital images are paired with grainy, moody film shots in a dance of landscapes, portraits, street scenes and still lifes.
